How to Choose an IBC Tank Adapter: Check the Connection First

An IBC tank can look straightforward until you try to connect something to its outlet. A fitting that looks close in a photo isn’t enough to establish compatibility.

Before ordering an adapter, identify both ends of the connection: the tank outlet and the fitting you want to attach.

Start with the tank outlet

Look for markings on the outlet, valve or existing cap. Record any size or thread information and take clear photographs.

Don’t assume that every IBC has the same outlet. If you can’t identify yours, ask the tank supplier or fitting seller for help.

Check more than the diameter

Thread compatibility depends on more than the width of the opening. The thread type, pitch and sealing arrangement also matter.

A rough measurement can help narrow down the options, but it shouldn’t be the only basis for choosing a fitting. Avoid forcing together parts that don’t thread on easily.

Identify what you want to connect

Write down the size and connection type of the hose fitting, tap or other component you plan to attach. An adapter must match both sides, not just the tank.

A photo of the complete proposed connection can be useful when asking about compatibility.

Check the intended application

Before buying, confirm the adapter’s material, sealing requirements and suitability for the liquid and operating conditions involved.

Don’t assume a fitting is suitable for drinking water, pressure, chemicals or continuous outdoor exposure unless those uses are explicitly supported. If you are reusing a tank, establish its contents history and suitability separately from selecting a fitting.

Gather the details before asking about fit

Take a clear photo facing the outlet and a side view showing the connection profile. Include any manufacturer markings and explain where you took your measurements.

Include details of the component you want to attach, along with the intended use. This gives the supplier a better starting point than a photo of the tank alone.

Ask before ordering

Looking at FarmFab3D’s IBC Tank Threaded Adapter? Send us your outlet markings, photographs and details of what you want to connect so we can help check whether it’s the right option.

You can use this enquiry as a starting point:

I’m looking for an adapter for this IBC outlet. I’ve attached photos of the outlet, its markings and the component I want to connect. The measurements are ____. The intended use is ____. Is your adapter compatible, and what sealing parts or installation instructions does it require?

Checking both connections and the intended application before ordering helps you choose with more confidence.
