Custom Coil Winder – From CAD Design to Printed Part

Custom Coil Winder – From CAD Design to Printed Part

This custom-designed coil winder was created to work with a drill and a winding counter, allowing copper wire to be wound into a coil while keeping track of the number of turns.

The drill provides the rotation, the counter records the turns, and the printed winder provides the form around which the wire is wound. It’s a practical example of designing a part to suit a specific workshop setup.

From Design to Print

The project started with a CAD model of the winder’s shaped plates and central mounting components. The renders and cross-section show how the parts fit together, while the finished print brings that design into a physical tool.

The photographs show the printed components both separated and assembled, highlighting the winding space between the plates.

Features include:

  • Custom design for a drill-driven coil-winding setup

  • Connection to a winding counter to track turns

  • Shaped plates that define the winding area

  • Separate printed plates and central mounting pieces

  • CAD design developed into a physical 3D-printed part

This project shows how custom design and 3D printing can produce useful tools for specialised jobs, with the part built around the equipment and task it needs to support.
