How to Choose a Soldering Third Hand: Wire Clamp or PCB Holder?
Trying to hold a wire, feed solder and control a soldering iron at the same time? A third hand gives your workpiece somewhere steady to sit while you work. But a wire clamp and a PCB holder solve different problems.
The simplest way to choose is to start with your project: are you joining two wires, or working on a circuit board?
For joining wires: choose a wire-holding clamp
For cable repairs and hobby wiring projects, look for a holder that keeps the two wire ends aligned and leaves the joint accessible. Check that the clamps suit your wire size and that you have room to approach with the iron.
FarmFab3D’s Soldering Wire Holder & Third Hand Clamp uses spring-loaded clamps to hold two wires in alignment. Its central work area provides access to the joint, and its compact design is easy to store between projects.
For circuit boards: choose a PCB holder
When you’re assembling components or repairing a circuit board, the board itself needs support. Look for a holder that grips it securely without obstructing the area you need to work on. Check the board dimensions and how you’ll access each side before choosing.
The PCB Soldering & Assembly Holder uses integrated clamping towers to secure a board during soldering, inspection and assembly. It’s designed for electronics hobbyists, makers and repair technicians who want to reduce board movement on the bench.
What to check before buying a soldering third hand
- Workpiece fit: Does it hold the wires or board you actually use? Confirm dimensions or ask about fit if they aren’t listed.
- Access: Can you reach the joint without the holder getting in the way?
- Stability: Will the workpiece stay steady as you position components or wires?
- Bench space: Does the holder fit comfortably alongside your iron stand and other tools?
- Heat precautions: Follow the holder’s material limits and keep the hot iron tip away from clamps and the base.
Using a 3D-printed holder around a soldering iron
These FarmFab3D holders are made from PETG or PLA+. They support the workpiece; they are not soldering-iron rests. Avoid direct contact with the hot tip, use a dedicated iron stand, and let joints cool before handling them. Work with suitable ventilation and follow your soldering equipment’s safety instructions.
